Saturday, July 7, at 8 p.m.: Pianist Emanuel Ax joins The Cleveland Orchestra for performances of Wolfgang Amadè Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 22 in E-flat major, K. 482, and Frédéric Chopin’s Andante spianato et Grand Polonaise brillante in E-flat major, Opus 22. Jahja Ling, music director of the San Diego Symphony since 2004, and former Cleveland Orchestra resident conductor who additionally served as Blossom Festival Director for six seasons (2000 to 2005), conducts the program, which also includes Franz von Suppé’s Overture to Poet and Peasant, Otto Nicolai’s Overture to The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Johannes Brahms’s Hungarian Dances Nos. 1, 5, and 6. Concert ticket prices: Pavilion $25 to $85, Lawn $20 (Under 18s Free).
Emanuel Ax is part of the Cleveland Orchestra family of artists who have appeared with the Orchestra regularly over a long period of time. He made his debut with The Cleveland Orchestra in January 1976 and has appeared with the Orchestra in more than 65 concerts since then, at Severance Hall (including the world premiere performances of John Adams’s Century Rolls and a cycle of the Beethoven piano concertos), Blossom Music Center, and on tour at Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, and in Europe. He also has performed three solo recitals and a duo recital with Yefim Bronfman in Severance Hall. Mr. Ax’s most recent concerts with the Orchestra were in May 2011.
