COLUMBUS OH -- Kindred the Family Soul will perform on Sunday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at the Vonn Jazz Lounge, 245 E. Campusview Blvd. in northeast Columbus.

Husband and wife Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon seemingly came out of nowhere in 2003 to release one of the most critically acclaimed soul albums of that year, “Surrender to Love.” The group drew comparisons to famous duos such as Womack and Womack and Ashford and Simpson. In contrast to much of what was being played on the radio at the time, Dantzler and Graydon sang of their deep love for each other and their family.

Dantzler and Graydon say in their band mission statement that their purpose is to “celebrate love, family and the true fighting spirit that keeps us all moving through the world. Spreading this message through building a community of like-minded individuals, whether they share the exact commonality of our lifestyle or not, will continue our work into the next phase. The great stories fans have shared about how our music has mirrored their own lives has touched us and inspired us to interact more with them.”

Kindred was formed in the late ‘90s by Dantzler, a noted soul music writer, and Graydon, a singer. They began writing together; covering themes not often explored in modern R&B.

The duo married in the late 90s and began performing around Philadelphia. They became friends with Jill Scott and she helped them land a contract with Hidden Beach Records in 2003.

Following the critical success of Surrender to Love and the smash hit “Far Away,” they released their highly anticipated sophomore album, “In This Life Together,” in October 2005. They followed that up in 2008 with “The Arrival,” which gave further voice to those working to keep relationships, family and romantic love alive.
