Broadway star Marva Hicks to join CJO for ‘Home for Holidays’
COUMBUS OHIO –African-American Broadway star Marva Hicks will join the Columbus Jazz Orchestra for its “Home for the Holidays” concert Nov. 29-Dec. 2 at the Southern Theatre, 21 E. Main St. in downtown Columbus.
Hicks previously joined the CJO for its acclaimed “A Night at the Apollo” concert last fall. After appearing in “Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music” for nearly three years, she met Stevie Wonder and began touring with him. She sang background vocals on his 1987 album, “Characters.” She also toured with Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and James Ingram.
As a gospel singer, Hicks is featured on the Broadway Inspirational Voices Christmas CD, “Great Joy.” As a singer and actress, Hicks appeared opposite Maurice Hines in “Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies,” for which she was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress. She also appeared in “The Women of Brewster Place,” “Bubbling Brown Sugar” and “Sing Mahalia Sing.”
During the “Home for the Holidays” concert, the CJO will partner with the Salvation Army of Central Ohio for the Adopt-a-Family program and collect toys for needy families at Christmas. Concert goers can contribute by donating toys to the Salvation Army’s trademark red kettles that will be stationed in the lobby of the Southern Theatre.
