CLEVELAND - V-GRIP team members arrested 13 people Wednesday for gun-related crimes, kicking off the largest, multi-agency effort to crack down on gun violence in the city of Cleveland.
Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson announced the effort Tuesday, which includes members of the FBI, ATF and US Marshals. V-GRIP stands for Violence Gun Reduction and Interdiction Program. Together, they plan to share information and resources to make as many gun-related arrests as they can.
The mayor's office said Wednesday's sweep is the first of many.
"This isn't just law enforcement coming in and enforcing a police state," said Community Relations Director Blaine Griffin. "This is the community saying we want these guns off the streets. We want the guns out of the hands of these young people."
Police also plan to communicate with community leaders and youth groups, and change the culture of young offenders.
"We're going to give the community every opportunity to be a part of the solution," said Griffin. "Without the community, this will not work."
More V-GRIP sweeps are planned for the near future.
