CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Thirty-seven people were laid off from the Cleveland Municipal Court Thursday afternoon.

Employees from the judicial division of the court were notified about 3 p.m., according to Ed Ferenc, spokesperson for the Cleveland Municipal Courts.

Laid off were one court reporter, two office administrators, five computer specialists, six magistrates, 11 deputy bailiffs and 12 probation officers. The cuts were a result of plan announced by Mayor Frank Jackson on April 27 to layoff about 400 city workers to help cope with a loss in state funding totaling to $35.7 million. The layoffs will trim $2 million from the city's budget, Ferenc said.

The 12 court judges had to sign off on the final decision to make the cuts, which reduces the staff from 326 to 289, Ferenc said.

Except for those laid off in the 1970's due to grant money running out, this is the first time in the court's nearly 100-year history that employees were laid off due to budget cuts.
