The outcome of the November 6th election is likely to have a direct impact on millions of Americans, perhaps affect your life and that of your friends and neighbors in a very substantial way.  This is not the time to be on the sidelines. That’s why it’s critical you are registered to vote and able to let your voice be heard.

On Tuesday, September 25th, I invite my constituents to join me in a rally at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.  The Board of Elections is located in Cleveland at East 30th and Euclid Avenue.

This event is an opportunity to register to vote, to check your registration, and by your presence, show our community that our democracy works best when everyone has access to the ballot box.

Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chairman Emanuel Cleaver and I sent a letter to all CBC members, encouraging them to participate in the “For the People” Voter Protection Initiative and hold events in their districts throughout the nation at the same time and on the same day, September 25th. That day is National Voter Registration Day.

Through a co-ordinated action, we want to ensure that as many eligible voters are registered as possible. We are also working with volunteers, civic groups, and organizations from throughout the country to send a strong message about the importance of protecting the fundamental, Constitutional right to vote.

As we have seen here in Ohio, election law changes have disproportionately impacted voting options for African Americans, seniors, students, as well as the disabled and the poor.   Please encourage your friends and neighbors to join us, get registered to vote, and stand up for voting rights. I hope to see you there!

I would also like to continue to call your attention to the fact that September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. On Friday, September 14, I hosted an event on Capitol Hill called “Backhanding Obesity,” to help fight and bring awareness to childhood obesity.

Participants were able to watch and listen to sports leaders, experts in youth development and corporate partners as they demonstrated ways to help end childhood and adult obesity in America.

Also during the demonstration, participants were able to test their “serve” against tennis pro Dean GoldFine, as well as getting in a great aerobic workout. The only way to eradicate childhood and adult obesity is to become active and bring awareness to this epidemic.

During Friday’s event, participants also learned of the many factors that have contributed to our nation’s obesity epidemic including the elimination of physical activity by technology, the disappearance of playgrounds in neighborhoods, and in schools, a lifestyle that involves more driving instead of walking, and finally the mere fact that Americans now simply eat more unhealthy foods.

I have made a commitment ensuring that the children of Ohio and nationally have access to a balanced diet and physical activity. Throughout September and year round I plan to generate awareness and help to educate Americans on the importance of proper nutrients and an active lifestyle for children and adults alike.

Working together, we can reverse this epidemic within a generation.
