Shooting on Longwood takes young girl life

d_NelsonCrime Stoppers has increased the reward to $5,000.00 (Five Thousand) for information leading to the arrest of the murderer of 15 year old Danica Nelson. Anyone with information in c/w this murder is asked to contact The Cleveland Division of Police.

Police are trying to identify two gunmen who shot and killed a Cleveland girl early Saturday, and wounded two other teens. Danica Nelson, 15, a sophomore at Jane Addams High School, who hoped one day to be a nurse, has been killed.

Investigators said Danica and the two other teens were shot after leaving a back-to-school party in the 3900 block of Longwood Avenue. Danica suffered a gunshot wound to the head and later died at MetroHealth Medical Center. Security guards at Arbor Park Village who witnessed the shooting told investigators it appeared the two gunmen appeared to fire indiscriminately into a group of partygoers.

"You all just destroyed my life and my family's life, and you all took away from her what she built," said Deanna Nelson, Danica's mother. Danica's aunt, Cleoties Dubose, asked "Why? This child was an innocent bystander; she went to a party to have fun, what teenagers do."

The security guards told police they tried to confront the gunmen, and one of them dropped his weapon before fleeing with the other shooter. "I think it's punks with guns, just opening fire," said Deanna Nelson, "not realizing how much damage that they do." Those who mourn the death of Danica Nelson are hoping it leads to serious debate over the problem of teens having easy access to guns. "These are babies killing babies, it's too much, and it needs to stop," said Dubose.

There was a candlight service held Monday night for young Nelson. Family, friends, neighbors and community leaders gathered at 5:30 p.m. Monday at East 39th Street and Longwood Avenue, where the shooting occurred.

Danica was one of four teens shot in less than 12 hours Saturday. The others are recovering. "Senseless gun violence is threatening to destroy a generation of young people either from death or incarceration," said Khalid Samad of Peace in the Hood.

No arrests have been made at this time. The family is now trying to raise money to pay for Danica's funeral. Donations can be made at any Key Bank.
