Monday afternoon, somewhere in the area of 4:30 p.m. an officer shot a man in the neck after police says he bumped into him trying to run. A few witnesses on the scene told the Call & Post that’s not how it happened.
The witness asked not to be identified, but allege they saw it different from the police version. The incident took place at the Shell gas Station on the corner of east 93rd and Kinsman, right across the street from the Fourth District Police Station.
Police say they moved in to investigate when they recognized a motorcycle as one that was involved in a recent hit skip accident on Sunday. "As they surrounded the tow truck, the suspect exited out the passenger side and tried to run. He stumbled, and collided with an officer. As a result of the collision, the officer's weapon discharged," said Sgt. Sammy Morris.
The Police are investigating the incident, but said the officer had his gun out, but did not aim and shoot the victim. It was through the collision that the gun went off.
Another witness, who claims to have seen the whole thing, but also refused to be identified, alleged the police have the story wrong. He says that the shooting could not have been the result of a collision between the officer and the suspect because the victim was five-to-seven feet away from cops when he was shot.
Right after the incident, EMS took the man, whose name has not been disclosed, to MetroHealth Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the neck and took a police officer to St. Vincent Charity Hospital.
The officer involved was taken to the hospital as well. He was treated and released.
The names of the police and victim have not been released.
