St. Ignatius, Kirkland win crowns

Last Saturday night was a joyous day for St. Ignatius as they picked up their 11th state football title. The Wildcats took the Division I state championship by rocking Pickerington Central 34-13, at Massillon. The Wildcats (13-2) pounced on them early so that there no drama. The scratched and clawed their way by scoring the first 20 points. However, Central tried to make it interesting by scoring twice on their last two drives before the half. The Wildcats defense played shutout ball in the second-half. Senior running back Tim McVey had 24 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns.

In Division 5, Kirkland rolls through a record of 15-0. The Hornets pound the ground with senior running back Christian Huber. He carried the ball 30 times for 196 yards and two touchdowns.

Trotwood-Madison went Green, capture D-II state crown – Israel Green saw nothing but green – green grass, on his way to a career-high of 326 yards and six touchdown as Trotwood-Madison took home the Division II gold by beating Avon 42-28 at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, on Friday. Green counted for all the touchdowns. As Trotwood-Madison taking their image of their nickname the Rams, Avon took to theirs nickname, the Eagles, by going to the air. Eagles’ quarterback Justin O’Rourke completed 27 of 50 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns.

Friday’s games -

#10 John F. Kennedy beats Glenville – Led by senior Anthony Howard’s 28 points and 14 rebounds effort, the John F. Kennedy Mighty Fighting Eagles open up their season with an 80-59 victory over visiting Glenville Tarblooders. The Fighting Eagles (1-0) also had another double-double performance from senior guard Jordan Marrow. Marrow had 12 points, a career-high of 15 assists and six steals. Senior big-man Saivon Jefferson had a double-double too. He had 16 points and 15 rebounds.

#4 Shaker Heights finishes against Toledo St. John’s – It was a battle between Louisville recruit Terry Rozier and Ohio State recruit Marc Loving. But both were not the key in the final stages of the game as hosting Shaker Heights nipped the Titans 63-62. Rozier led his team with 27 points and Loving led the Titans with 25. In the last 30 seconds with the Titans up 60-58, junior Mel Leach tied the game with two free throws. Leach, who started his first game as a Red Raider, finished with six points. Sophomore guard Rosel Hurley two free throws with 11.7 left, put the Red Raiders up by two at 62-60. Red Raiders first lead. But quickly, junior point-guard Austin Gardner’s coast-to-coast lay-up squared the game at 62. However, Gardner, who was fouled on the play, had a chance to put them up by one, but he missed the free-throw and senior forward Robert Fomby grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Caleb Wallace with 3.5 seconds left. Fomby’s hit one of his free-throws to put Shaker up 63-62. Following Titans’ time-out, D.J. Bonds’ three-point attempt hit the side of the rim.

# 8 John Hay rips East Tech – Senior and Lehigh recruit Devon Carter sparked the John Hay Hornets with the team-high of 18 points as they easily beat visiting East Tech 76-54 in the Senate and season opener. The Hornets did not waste any time from the get-go. The Hornets stung the Scarabs with 25 first quarter points. Newcomer from Cleveland Heights Maurice O’ Field had 15 points.

#1 Garfield Heights bites LeBron-watched team – LeBron James was in attendance to see his former high school the St. Vincent – St. Mary get run out of the gym. The Bulldogs unleashed a 77-61 victory. The Irish, who were ranked third in the Kizer/Call and Post’s Top 15, outscored the Bulldogs 30-12 in the fourth quarter, to make the score seemed close. Mike Davis led the Bulldogs with 22 points. And yes James did get booed!

Senior guard Tyree Gaiter poured in career-high 38 points – Tyree Gaiter scored 38 points in leading the Cleveland Heights Tigers to their 84-67 triumph over visiting Lakeside, last Friday. Gaiter

Saturday’s games –

Brush edges hosting Bengals – The twin towers of Phaorah Brown and Curtis Oakley for the Brush Arcs held on to beat hosting Benedictine Bengals 66-65. Brown had the game-high of 21 points and Oakley had eight points. For the Bengals (0-1), Desmond Ridenour had 20 points.

Saturday’s games -

Heights Tigers roared load at Maple – The Lady Tigers of Cleveland Heights looked like world beaters as they dominated the first four minutes of the opening quarter and they never look back in their 74-42 victory. The Lady Tigers, who scored the first 16 points, led 22-2. Then third-year head coach Kim Hansen got those subs and they held their own and led 27-11 after one.  The Lady Tigers scored the first eight points in the second.  At the half, the Lady Tigers were in cruise control leading 44-23.

“When you are leading like that, the rest is scrimmage. We want to fine tune things. I was not happy with most of the game,” said Hansen.

The Lady Tigers had four players in double-figures in the scoring column. Senior Jasmine Harper, who has yet to sign to a college yet, had the team-high of 17 points and sophomore Ashaunti Abshaw had 16 points.

The Lady Tigers (2-0) started the season with a thrilling victory over visiting Magnificat. They will host Eastlake North, this Wednesday.

Peck’s big game gives Shaker first victory – Senior and Wagner University recruit Jordyn Peck’s game-high of 24 points helped the Shaker Lady Red Raiders to a 61-46 victory over hosting Toledo Waite. The Lady Red Raiders (1-1) jumped out to a 21-5 first quarter lead.

Panthers get the best of Tigers – With junior guard Jalin Steel anchoring the Euclid Panthers’ offense it will be a very good season for them. Steel’s team-high of 14 points help the Panthers (1-0) to an easy 64-35 rout over the hosting Warrensville Lady Tigers. Senior Ellie Morek added 11 points.

Friday’s games -

Lady Cardinals tough in the fourth quarter – The Shaw Lady Cardinals blanked the visiting Bedford Lady Bearcats 18-0 in the fourth quarter to prevail 46-40 in their Lake Erie League contest. The Lady Cardinals were led by junior guard Chanel Davis with the game-high 21 points.

Rhodes are ram tough against Rebels – Rhodes Lady Rams got off to a good rumbling start in the 2011-12 season by pounding the hosting John Adams Lady Rebels 67-45 in the Senate opener. Sophomore guard Tasha Duncan had the game-high of 20 points. Junior Amber Kirby had 10 points. The Rebels, who lost all 20 games last season, lost their first two games.
