The Kym Sellers Foundation (KSF) Educational Seminar on MS will be held on Aug 17th at the Marriott Cleveland Downtown. The Seminar is FREE AND OPEN to the public. Key seminar target attendees are MS patients, their families and friends. The Kym Sellers Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves. Approximately 400,000 Americans acknowledge having Multiple Sclerosis. Every week about 200 people are diagnosed. Research indicates this number can be as high as 2.5 million people (National MS Society, August 2005).

Northeast Ohio has a higher proportion of diagnosed persons with MS than the national average.

African Americans with Multiple Sclerosis:

The type of MS generally found in African Americans appears to be more aggressive and does not respond as well to current treatment options as the type found in the majority population (Dr. Omar Khan, Director of National MS Clinic, Wayne State University School of Medicine).

The KSF was started in 2000 out of Kym’s desire to increase awareness and educate others, more specifically, African Americans and other minorities who are affected by MS. Since its inception, The KSF has been dedicated solely to individuals with MS, promoting healthy lifestyles in order for them to develop to their individual level of potential.

To meet the goal of increasing awareness, each year the KSF conducts Educational Seminars that:

Promote awareness and provide education about the effects, care, and treatment of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) to individuals and their families who are affected by MS in the Greater Cleveland/Akron communities, with a particular focus on minorities, specifically African Americans;

Provide a vehicle for individuals to receive information through workshops, seminars and other educational programs on Multiple Schlerosis; and,

Provide a forum for others with MS to share their experiences, failures and successes that allow for camaraderie’s to be established and that ultimately serve as viable, critical support networks functions.

The Seminars accompany the Annual Gala Benefit and are conducted the morning of the Gala. The Seminar Program is a two and a half our endeavor that begins at 9:30 AM with breakfast and registration. Thereafter, the Programming includes opening remarks by the KSF Founder and President, Kym Sellers. Ms. Sellers is followed by noted specialists in the field of MS studies offering the latest in medical treatments and advances in the cure for MS. The Program wraps up with anecdotal testimony from Friends within the KSF network sharing their success story about MS and the importance of friends and family. There’s a lot of information shared and fun to be had by all. We look forward to seeing our annual supporters and meeting new friends.
