Most are familiar with the statement, “jack of all trades master of none,” and in most instances that is a very accurate summation. But, when it comes to the multitalented Sheryl Underwood, this is merely a bunch of hot air. Heading to town quicker than the frost and snow of the brutal Midwestern winter, Underwood will be gracing the stage at the Improv Comedy Club and Restaurant located on the West Bank of the Flats (directly next door to Shooters) Friday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Oct. 12.
Not one to shy away from challenging situations Underwood has made a career out of defying virtually all odds and the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that were thrust into her path. While television and modern media outlets might give the impression that there has been a great deal of equality brought to the comedic circuit, this is rather misleading. Certainly women have gained a tremendous amount of access and leeway over the years, but the comedy game is still very much a good old boys’ club. The females who seek to make a name for themselves still have to work twice as hard to reach the same plateaus. Thankfully, this was not a problem for the strong willed southerner with a penchant for making people laugh with witty cerebral humor.
Like most great talents, even though mastering the comedy stage and touring circuit is no small feat in and of itself, Underwood found that she could and wanted to do more with herself. She fully realized that her comedy career could serve as the perfect springboard for other projects. And on this notion she was 100 percent correct.
Since shaking up the comedy world with her one of kind style and unique perspectives on the world we live in, Underwood has branched out to television where she’s a co-host of the popular show “The Talk,” movies, radio and entrepreneurial endeavors that have provided very substantial dividends. In addition to her comedy career, Underwood is the owner and chief operator of her own Pack Rat Productions – a rather successful company in its own right.
Yet, with all these shining accolades firmly acknowledged, it was the comedy that put her on the map and it’s the comedy that will seduce you out of your house and lead you to come downtown to hear one of our generation’s great talents and unique voices. Being a serious individual herself the greater bulk of her comedy is based upon her real life personal experience and those meaty topics going on in the world today.
Cleveland, don’t miss your opportunity to come share an evening with one of the funniest, savvy and successful female comedians in the last few decades. It will certainly be one great time.
