Musical Dreamgirls to be presented by Akron School

Many Akron School for the Arts students will be “livin’ the dream” with upcoming performances of the popular musical Dreamgirls at Firestone High School. Dreamgirls will be presented in the Linda B. Kersker Auditorium for five performances starting at 7 p.m. Wed., Nov. 20, 2013. Additional performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thurs., Nov. 21, Fri., Nov. 22, and Sat., Nov. 23, 2013. A single matinee performance will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sat., Nov 23, 2013.
Advanced tickets to the Firestone Theatre production of Dreamgirls cost $8 and are available online at BrownPaperTickets.com, by mail order, and in the school commons during all lunch periods starting no later than Mon., Nov 18, 2013. Tickets purchased at the door cost $10.00 and will be available starting one hour before each performance. Special VIP tickets are available for $13.00 and include a reserved seat as well as access to the VIP Room before the show and at intermission. Alumni of Thespian Troupe 5570 are invited to attend the show at no charge for the Wednesday evening and Saturday matinee performance.
A special soul food dinner will be served between the matinee and the evening performance of Dreamgirls on Sat., Nov. 23, 2013. Seatings are at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. The dinner includes fried chicken, Mac-n-cheese, green beans, cornbread, pound cake, and lemonade. Dreamgirls features the music of Henry Krieger and a book and lyrics by Tom Eyen. It is packed with toe-tapping musical numbers and follows the compelling story of a young female singing group who become music superstars. It is loosely based on the real-life stories of performers such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown and Jackie Wilson.
It first appeared on Broadway in 1981 and earned six Tony Awards. It was made into a major motion picture in 2006.
The Firestone Theatre production of Dreamgirls is under the direction of Mark A. Zimmerman. A team of dedicated, talented guest artists complete the production team. They include Ron Hazelett (music director), Sheena Mason (choreographer), Randie O. Sass (costume designer), and Elynmarie Kazle (production manager). Senior Tayler Threatt serves as the production stage manager. She is assisted by senior Samantha Lewis and junior Morgan Csejtey.
The cast is lead by seniors Louis Harmon (Wayne), Dana Green (Michelle), Wynter Mason (Deena), Francine Parr (Lorrell), Kari Rodgers (Effie), and D’Angelo Sanders (Curtis). Leading juniors include Jordan Euell (Little Albert), Chris Humbert (Jimmy Early) and Greg Williams (Marty). Sophomores Ernie Johnson (Tiny Joe Dixon) and Marquis Kelker (C.C.) round out the leading cast. The ensemble is led by seniors Carly Ameling, Arrik Brown, Bichelle Jeffries, Christian Stevenson, and Rikayla Wright. Junior members of the ensemble include Brielle Burley, Alexis Gattis, Jeremy Gensel, Pierce Jordan, Carlton Kibber, Allyah Puttnam, Abby Riley, Nalani Rodgers, Larry Swoope, and Sataira Williams. Sophomore and freshman members of the ensemble include Charles Allgood and Destiny Jenkins.
The Akron School for the Arts is a nationally recognized visual and performing arts institution of the Akron Public Schools.
