Malcolm McCoy, student teacher adviser at Ohio State University-Lima Campus, dies

LIMA — Malcolm Douglass McCoy, 81, died at 9:18 a.m. Aug. 29, at Baton Rouge Health Services Community.
He was born Dec. 30, 1931, in Columbus to Frederick Douglass and Geraldine Marie Tyler McCoy, who preceded him in death. On July 7, 1958, he married Beverly Owens McCoy, who survives in Lima.
Mr. McCoy was a teacher for Columbus Public Schools from 1960 to 1974. He was an elementary school principal for Lima City Schools from 1974 to 1990. He was a student teacher adviser at Ohio State University-Lima Campus. He worked at Lima Broadcast Co. as assistant to the president of minority affairs. He was also a self-employed student tutor.
He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1955 and in the Naval Reserve from 1955 to 1972. He attended Ohio State University and Central State University. He received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1960 and a Master of Educational Administration in 1970. He was a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Explorer Scout, and Eagle Scout. He attended many Boy Scout National Jamborees. He was a National Jamboree Scoutmaster (Troop 324) in 1993. He was on the Wood Badge Staff and the Silver Beaver Central Ohio Council in 1980. He was an Ohio State Football Stadium Scout usher from 1944 to 1950 and an adult leader from 1960 until recent years.
He was a member of several boards, including Church People for Change and Reconciliation, Cheryl Allen Center, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Lima Head Start, Lima Symphony, Black Swamp Area Council, and a city of Lima Positive Lifestyles participant. He was a member of Christ Church Episcopal of Lima and later Trinity Episcopal of Findlay. He was a lay reader and chalist, a member of the Diocese of Ohio Committee to End Racism, and the Diocesan Nomination Committee. He was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen Inc. Ohio Memorial Chapter of Columbus, and vice-president of the Central Ohio Alpine Ski Troop.
He was very musical. He was a member of the West High School Marching Band in Columbus, The Ohio State University Marching Band, the U.S. Navy (San Diego, NTC Drum & Bugle Corps), and Central State University marching band. In his spare time, he loved to jog, windsurf, sail, ski, mountain bike, and photography.
He is survived by a son, Malcolm Douglass McCoy II, of Lima; two daughters, Erin Theresa Marie McCoy, of Lima, and Kelly Lois McCoy Williams, of Chicago; two granddaughters, Chelsea Alexandra McCoy Williams and Lindsay Tyler Williams; and a sister-in-law, Juanita Justine Owens, of New York.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Eric J. Williams.
Services will begin at 1 p.m., Thursday, September 5th, at Philippian Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Chris Schutz officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, September 4th, at Jones-Clark Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.
