The Salvation Army will be hosting its 22nd annual Estate and Charitable Gift Planning Institute Seminar on September 16, 2014. This free seminar will be broadcast to twenty-two locations throughout Ohio. The seminar will begin at 10:00 a.m. and conclude at 4:30 p.m. EST. Attorneys, CPAs, Certified Financial Advisors, Trust Officers and other planning professionals will receive continuing education credits in their field for attending the seminar.

This year speakers will include Ann B. Burns, J.D. and Samuel A. Donaldson, J.D., LL.M. Ann B. Burns, J.D. is currently the Chair of the Trust, Estate and Charitable Planning Group for Gray Plant Mooty. Samuel A. Donaldson, J.D., LL.M. is currently a Professor of Law at Georgia State University.

The Program:

ETHICS SESSION - 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Representing Families and Fiduciaries

The new planning paradigm requires advisors and fiduciaries to consider the estate and income tax consequences of a particular strategy to the family as a whole. Ann will discuss ethical issues arising from the representation of multiple members of a family, fiduciaries who owe duties to diverse beneficiaries and charitable organizations. The session will review current case law.

New Paradigms: Understanding What’s New—Current Developments and Updates

Estate planning is constantly changing as income taxes increase, estate taxes are reduced, portability takes hold, and the economy recovers. Samuel will help advisors understand what’s new and how it impacts their clients.

SESSION II - 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Where Do We Go From Here? Planning Strategies for the Small, Medium and Large Estate

Choosing strategies for each individual client requires a careful analysis of the estate, gift and income tax consequences to the client and the family as a whole. Ann and Samuel will discuss how to approach this analysis and explore examples of useful strategies in various circumstances.
