Duffer's Alley Week of July 2, 2014

Today marks the debut of Duffers' Alley, a weekly column on the exploits of Black Golf clubs featuring the members of the Cleveland Chapter of the National Negro Golf Association (NNGA) as well as other local golf clubs. The column will also provide information on charity golf outings which benefit the Black community.

First up, are the results of the NNGA play for the weekend of June 23.  The guys along with their guest traveled to Forest Hills Golf Course in Elyria, Ohio.

The first foursome including reigning Club Champion Jeff Gilbert, teed off at 10:30 and the fireworks began immediately, with  George (Fraziernet) Frazier setting the tone for the day by sticking his tee-shot on the second hole to within three feet. The golf kept getting better with Jimmie Chandler and guests Mike Cheselka, and Ollie Davis, also dropping tee shots within three fee tee on the remaining par threes.

The big winners for the day were Jeff Gilbert, low gross (76), just ahead of Billy Ogle (77) and Eric Payne low net (66) edging out Jimmie Chandler (69).

The 30th Annual Kappa Alpha Psi Cleveland Alumni Chapter Scholarship Golf Outing, was held on June 25th at Pleasant Hills Golf Course in Chardon, Ohio.  Over 117 golfers teed it up, with teams traveling from Pittsburgh and Columbus. At the end of the day the winners were Jermaine Bennett (low gross 73), Timothy Frederick won the A Flight with Arthur (Chillie) Childress the Senior Flight Champ and Toni Tell winner of the women's flight.

The Cleveland Retired School Administrators also hosted annual golf outing on the 25th at Glen Eagles in Twinsburg.  The tournament provides scholarship benefits to Cleveland Municipal School District Seniors.
Winners included Mark Hanusein, Men's low medalist and Cindy Metzger, Women's low medalist.

The week ended with the NNGA playing at the beautiful Ellsworth Meadows Golf Course in Hudson, Ohio on June 30th.  This short but difficult track attracted a full field of 24 golfers.  The big winner was Jeff Gilbert with a low gross of 68, followed by Billy Ogle (78) and William (Bill) Tell the Senior Flight Winner who shot 83.  Closest to the pin winners were Norm Bliss, William (Bill) Tell, Jamie Gilbert and yours truly Michael Nelson.
