Duffer's Alley

Duffer's Alley Week of July 9, 2014

What a wonderful July 4th weekend! Golfers all over Northeast Ohio rejoiced. Great weather, perfect playing conditions. What could possibly have been better? We’ll maybe my golf game, but that’s another story. My weekend began with a round at Rawiga Golf & Swim Club, a beautiful track in Medina County, near Rittman, Ohio. I teed it up with Attorney Bob Davis, Larry Harris and Don Rozell. Playing from the White tees (6359 yards, rating 70.6, slope 124), it took a few holes to adjust to the lightning quick greens, but soon Bob and the boys got things under control. It took me 7 holes before I got my first par (a 485 yard par 5). But by then, I was so far out of the match that I was just along for the sightseeing. If you want to play a nice track for a reasonable price, drive the 34 miles due south from downtown Cleveland. You’ll enjoy every minute as each hole will test your game.

On Friday, and Sunday, I joined my NNGA brethren (Cleveland Chapter) at Highland and Chardon Lakes respectively. My playing partners for Friday were Attorney Randy Keller, Sr., and his son Randy Jr., (great when family play together) and Baron Brown. Now I don’t know about the other foursomes, but I really enjoyed the 4 hours I spent with these brothers. We played the Valley Course (previously known as the Red) from the white tees. Cleveland’s own internationally recognized motivational speaker George Frazer showed that he has a little golf game as well. He shot the round of his life and had every club in his bag working on a day when he finished with a low round of 79 (from the senior tees); factor in his handicap and George shot a white-hot 63. Randy Sr. was hot on his heels finishing with 4 birdies over the last 6 holes to finish with an 82. I spent Sunday testing my skills at the Chardon Lakes Golf Course in Geauga County. I failed (lol), but you talking about a pretty golf course. My foursome included Former Police Commander, William (Bill) Tell, Cleveland Firefighter, Jimmy Lewis and money manager, Steve Ashley. You want to play with a group of nice guys? You couldn’t do much better than these fellas. But the golf of the day was played by Eric Payne, who shot a low gross of 83. He was followed by Donald “Corky” Williams (who shot 86, playing from the senior tees).

Upcoming events: The Tiretown Golf Club, host their 64th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament at the Mayfair Country Club, in Green, Ohio, Saturday July 12th. This tournament provides scholarships for college bound Akron area students. Tournament entry fee includes 18 holes of golf with cart, breakfast, lunch, dinner and door prizes. Kappa Alpha Psi’s own Joe (Joe Pat) Patterson is the organizer.
For information call (330) 666-1946. The Cleveland Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Golf Outing, July 16, 2014 at Cherokee Hills Golf Course. This event is always well organized and is a must play outing. It’s also the last of the 2014 season’s men’s fraternity golf outings. For information call (440) 543-7888. Now it’s time to hit the whirlpool. All of this weekend’s golf has me worn out. So, until next week, keep it in the short grass and here’s a tip… “When hitting your long irons, set your shoulders level and distribute your weight 50-50.”
