Ohio politics was rocked Sunday after U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno publicly called on his former son-in-law, U.S. Representative Max Miller, to resign from Congress, saying the congressman “should not serve” in the U.S. House of Representatives. The statement marks the senator’s strongest public criticism to date amid an ongoing and highly publicized family and legal dispute. 

Moreno’s remarks came after months of allegations made by his daughter, Emily Moreno, during a contentious divorce and custody battle. She has accused Miller of domestic abuse and other misconduct. Miller has categorically denied the allegations, maintaining that they are false and politically motivated. No criminal conviction has resulted from the allegations, and the legal disputes remain ongoing. 

In a statement posted Sunday, Moreno wrote that if there are “basic standards of character required to hold elected office,” Miller does not meet them and should step down. The senator also said he believes Miller needs professional psychological help before holding public office. 

The comments represent a significant shift from Moreno’s earlier reluctance to discuss the matter publicly, citing his family’s privacy. His decision to speak out followed renewed public attention after Miller released a livestream defending himself against the allegations and announcing that he would remain in his reelection campaign. 

Miller responded by rejecting the accusations and insisting that they have never been substantiated in court. He has vowed to continue seeking reelection to represent Ohio’s 7th Congressional District and has previously pursued legal action against his former wife over the allegations. 

The controversy has drawn national attention because it involves two prominent Ohio Republicans whose political alliance has dissolved into a deeply personal and public conflict. The dispute has also intensified scrutiny of the congressional race, with Democrats arguing the allegations raise questions about Miller’s fitness for office, while many Republicans are weighing the political consequences ahead of the election. 

As the legal proceedings continue, no final judicial findings have resolved the competing claims. The developing controversy is expected to remain a major issue in Ohio politics throughout the 2026 election season.
