Melody J. Stewart Named First African American Supreme Court Justice
As I reflect on the life and the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it is incumbent upon me to recognize increments of what Dr. King saw when he looked over the mountain. It is the charge and responsibility of our people to acknowledge our accomplishments wherever they may be. In-keeping with that responsibility, I take special mention of the Honorable Judge Melody J. Stewart, now the 161st Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. On Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 1:30 pm in the Thomas J. Meyer Ohio Judicial Center in an investiture ceremony, Judge Stewart took her place in history as the first African American to be elected to the Ohio Supreme Court of Ohio. After the Administration of the Oath of Office, Judge Stewart was welcomed to the bench by the Honorable Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor. I pray for her success as well as salute her sacrifices and accomplishments. History will record her successes and duly deserved position as Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court.
