Cleveland police continued a search for the suspects in a deadly early-morning shooting on Interstate 71 that left two people dead and raised urgent questions about public safety on city roadways.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victims in the Saturday morning attack as 35-year-old Emerald Vanderhorst and 31-year-old Jordan King. Both were found shot inside a vehicle at about 1:40 a.m. near the I-71 North and I-490 split. Vanderhorst was pronounced dead at the scene, and King later died from his injuries at MetroHealth Medical Center.
According to preliminary police reports, the victims were traveling on the highway when an unknown vehicle approached and opened fire on their car, then fled the scene before officers arrived. Investigators have described the incident as a “targeted shooting,” though no suspects have yet been publicly identified or arrested.
Cleveland EMS and police units reached the location after multiple calls about shots fired and a vehicle crash. An additional woman in her 30s at the scene refused medical transport, authorities said.
Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with relevant information — including surveillance footage, cellphone video, or eyewitness accounts — to contact the Cleveland Police Homicide Unit. Detectives are canvassing the area and examining evidence from the scene as part of an active homicide investigation.
The double fatality is the latest in a string of violent incidents in the city this winter, prompting renewed calls from community leaders and residents for increased patrols and preventive action on major thoroughfares. No motive has been released, and police have not provided descriptions of the suspect vehicle or occupants.
As the investigation continues, the community has been left grappling with shock and concern over the violence on a major interstate that many residents use daily.
