CANTON, Ohio — A 15-year-old has surrendered to authorities in connection with the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old that has shaken the Canton community, police confirmed Monday.
According to investigators, the teenager turned himself in accompanied by a parent and legal counsel. The juvenile is being held pending formal charges as detectives continue to piece together the events that led to the deadly incident. Because of the ages involved, officials have not released the names of either the victim or the suspect.
Police said the shooting occurred in a residential area, prompting an immediate response from officers and emergency crews. The 12-year-old was transported to a local hospital, where the child later died from gunshot wounds.
Canton Police Chief officials described the surrender as a significant step in the investigation but emphasized that the case remains active. “Our focus is on accountability and ensuring justice for the victim and their family,” a department spokesperson said.
Neighbors and community leaders expressed grief and outrage over the loss of a young life, renewing calls for greater intervention to address youth violence and access to firearms. Vigils and memorials were being planned as residents sought to support the victim’s family and one another.
Authorities urged anyone with additional information to contact Canton police or submit tips anonymously. Further details, including potential charges and court proceedings, are expected as the investigation continues.
