On Saturday, January 17, 2026, the historic Mt. Sinai–Friendship United Church of Christ became a place where faith, public service, and community leadership converged, as Pastor Dr. C. Jay Matthews warmly welcomed Cuyahoga County’s Democratic incumbent judges who will appear on the May 2026 ballot. The gathering, held as a brunch of appreciation, honored the tireless work of Cuyahoga County Democratic Party city and ward leaders—the backbone of grassroots democracy.
Hosted by a distinguished slate of jurists—Judge Emmanuella Groves, Judge Anita Laster Mays, Judge Michael John Ryan, Judge Shannon Gallagher, Judge Kira Krivosh, Judge Jennifer O’Donnell, Judge Andrew Santoli, Judge Brendan Sheehan, Judge William Vodrey, Judge Laura Gallagher, and Judge Colleen Ann Reali—the brunch was both celebratory and purposeful. It reflected a shared understanding that strong courts, responsive government, and engaged communities are inseparable.
The event underscored the judiciary’s recognition of the often-unseen labor of local Democratic leaders who organize neighborhoods, mobilize voters, and sustain civic engagement year-round. In a political climate that can feel distant to everyday citizens, the brunch served as a reminder that democracy is personal and relational—built on trust, presence, and shared values.
Pastor Dr. Matthews provided a gracious and welcoming space for open dialogue, fellowship, and a shared meal, reinforcing the church’s long-standing role as a gathering place for community reflection and action. Conversations flowed easily, laughter filled the room, and a spirit of unity prevailed.
As Scripture reminds us, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18). On this Saturday morning, vision was alive—rooted in service, strengthened by collaboration, and nourished by community. Indeed, a good time was had by all, and the bonds between faith leaders, elected officials, and party workers were renewed, pointing toward a future shaped by justice, accountability, and collective responsibility.
