CLEVELAND — The city of Cleveland is mourning the loss of longtime public servant and community advocate Bill Patmon, who passed away on April 12, 2026, at the age of 80.
A respected figure in Northeast Ohio politics, Patmon dedicated decades of his life to public service, leaving a lasting impact on both the city and the state. He served as a member of the Cleveland City Council, representing Ward 8 from 1990 to 2001, before going on to serve in the Ohio House of Representatives for the 10th District from 2011 until 2018.
Known for his independent voice and commitment to social justice, Patmon built a reputation as a principled leader who prioritized the needs of his constituents over politics. During his time in office, he chaired key committees and played a major role in shaping policies focused on economic development, public safety, and equal opportunity.
One of his most notable legislative achievements was the passage of the “Lizzie B. Byrd Act,” named in honor of his mother. The law ensured that breast cancer patients receive full disclosure of treatment options, including access to reconstructive surgery—an effort widely praised as a major step forward in patient rights and healthcare transparency.
