Shammas Malik and the City of Akron have announced a new down payment assistance program designed to help first-time homebuyers purchase homes in the city.
City leaders say the program will help residents cover down payments and closing costs — one of the biggest obstacles preventing many families from becoming homeowners.
Mayor Malik said the initiative is aimed at helping more Akron residents build generational wealth while strengthening neighborhoods throughout the city.
“Homeownership remains one of the strongest pathways to generational wealth,” Malik said during the announcement.
Officials say the program is expected to benefit working families, young professionals, and first-generation homebuyers struggling with rising housing costs and interest rates.
Residents seeking information about eligibility, applications, and housing counseling can contact the City of Akron Housing Division or local housing assistance agencies.
