The City of University Heights proudly continued a beloved eastside tradition Monday as residents, veterans, families, and community organizations gathered for the city’s annual Memorial Day Parade — the longest-running Memorial Day parade on Cleveland’s east side.
The 2026 parade stepped off at 11 a.m. along Silsby Road, marking nearly six decades of remembrance and civic pride since the tradition first began in 1966. The only interruption in the parade’s history came in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Crowds lined the streets as marching bands, veterans groups, scout troops, elected officials, and neighborhood organizations made their way through the city in tribute to the nation’s fallen military heroes. American flags waved throughout the parade route while residents applauded participants and honored those who sacrificed their lives in service to the country.
Following the parade, a solemn memorial ceremony was held at Gearity Professional Development School, where community leaders and veterans reflected on the meaning of Memorial Day and recognized the courage and sacrifice of America’s servicemen and women.
For many residents, the annual event represents more than a parade — it is a longstanding community tradition that brings generations together in remembrance and patriotism.
As communities throughout Northeast Ohio marked Memorial Day with ceremonies and observances, University Heights once again demonstrated why its parade remains one of the region’s most respected and enduring tributes to fallen veterans.
