CLEVELAND, Ohio — Protesters gathered in Cleveland and across the country to show their support for U.S. Postal Service workers and voice opposition to potential privatization efforts.
The rallies come amid ongoing discussions about restructuring the USPS, with former President Donald Trump previously criticizing the agency for financial losses and suggesting it could be moved under the Commerce Department.
Demonstrators fear that privatization could lead to widespread job losses and negatively impact mail service.
“We’re going to fight like hell! If they want to take that away from us, you know what I say, oh hell no,” protesters chanted during the rally.
John Farsetti, one of the demonstrators in Cleveland, emphasized the importance of postal workers. “The American people depend on us to deliver their mail and packages six days a week. We’re standing our ground, telling them we’re not going to stop, we’re not going to give up.”
In Akron, another rally was held on Saturday, where a speaker connected the issue to the upcoming midterm elections. “There are so many things we could do to try to put an end to this. Privatizing and helping his millionaire buddies make more money is not the answer.”
Community members also joined the protests in support of their local mail carriers. “The postal carriers are not just people that deliver your mail,” said Darlene Gabler. “They are the eyes and ears of our community, and they’re valued.”
The rallies highlighted widespread concern over the potential restructuring of the USPS, with protesters vowing to continue their fight to keep the service public.
