Alabama State Alumni Host Gospel Brunch to Support Student Scholarships

CLEVELAND — The Alabama State University Alumni Association, Cleveland Chapter, brought together alumni, supporters, and community leaders on Saturday, September 27, 2025, for a soul-stirring Scholarship Benefit Gospel Brunch at the Mediterranean Event Center.

The master of ceremonies was Daniel J Brinson ll. 

The event, opened with the occasion by Freddie Travis Warren, highlighted, the  2 living founding members Farley Seldon and Annie Lard Bey and the chapter’s enduring mission since 1961 — to “celebrate our past, our present, and the future of our students.”

The invocation by Joe Taylor, set the tone with words of faith and encouragement. 

In keeping with the day’s theme, past president James Catledge reminded guests that “students turn into scholars, and scholars turn into leaders.”

Special presentations were given to Farley Seldon by Willa Walker, chapter vice president, followed by acknowledgments from President Clarence Bozeman, who recognized alumni contributions and community supporters.

The celebration was uplifted with powerful musical selections by the Melodies of Praise and a dynamic performance by Marc Johnson alongside the Crème of the Crop Band, whose blend of gospel and soul had the audience on their feet.

The brunch concluded with a heartfelt benediction from Rev. Dr. Chelton Flanagan, senior pastor of Holy Trinity Baptist Church, sending attendees forward with renewed commitment to the mission of supporting education.

Proceeds from the benefit will fund scholarships for deserving students, ensuring that Alabama State University’s legacy of excellence continues through the next generation of leaders.
