LYFT DRIVER SHOT AND KILLED IN BUCKEYE-WOODHILL NEIGHBORHOOD

A local rideshare driver was fatally shot Sunday night in the Buckeye-Woodhill neighborhood, prompting a homicide investigation by the Cleveland Division of Police and raising fresh concerns about violence affecting working families on the East Side.

Officers were dispatched just before 10 p.m. to the 10200 block of Rosehill Avenue, where a vehicle reportedly struck a guardrail. Inside the crashed car, emergency medical crews found a 56-year-old man with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities confirmed the victim was a Lyft driver, identified as a contractor with the popular ride-hailing service. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner identified the rideshare driver who was fatally shot on the city’s East Side Sunday evening. He is Antoine Magel Latham of Cleveland.

The Cleveland Police Department’s Homicide Unit is leading the investigation and working with Lyft, the rideshare company, to gather leads and identify possible suspects. At this time, no arrests have been made, and police have released few details about a possible suspect or motive.

Residents of the Buckeye-Woodhill area, a community already familiar with gun violence, expressed shock and grief after the fatal shooting. Many neighbors said the crime is a painful reminder of ongoing safety concerns in the East Side community. Although the neighborhood has seen several violent incidents in recent months, including other shootings and homicides, residents are calling for increased police engagement and community support to reduce violence.

Lyft released a statement through local media expressing sympathy for the victim’s loved ones and a commitment to cooperate with law enforcement as the investigation continues. Company officials noted their “deep sadness” at the loss of a driver who was simply trying to make a living.

This incident highlights broader concerns about the safety of rideshare drivers nationwide, a workforce that often faces unpredictable situations on the job. Last year, other drivers in Ohio and across the country were victims of violent attacks — underscoring persistent safety risks for gig-economy workers.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Cleveland Division of Police or Crimestoppers. As the investigation unfolds, community leaders hope that answers and justice will follow for the victim’s family.
